8th Grade Washington D.C. Trip

We are excited to announce that we will be taking our 8th grade students to Gettysburg and Washington D.C. with Stevenson and Franklin Middle School.

We have three buses reserved. The trip will be first come, first served. Once we fill one bus, students will be waitlisted to ensure we can fill a second bus. The waitlisted student’s trip will be confirmed once bus two fills. The same process will be in place for bus three. If we can not fill bus two or three, those waitlisted will be refunded. This is why it is very important to reserve your spot as soon as possible. You can do that here.

Please be on the look-out for fundraising information to come home in the next week or so. The more you fundraise, the less you will pay towards the cost of the trip.

#PreventSuicide

Did you know suicide affects all ages? In 2020, suicide was among the top 9 leading causes of death for people ages 10-64. Suicide was the second leading cause of death for people ages 10-14 and 25-34. This week we wore yellow to raise awareness.

Suicide and Crisis Lifeline

Individuals experiencing suicidal thoughts or other mental health crisis are encouraged to call 988, which is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Crossing Guards Needed

Are you interested in giving back to the community and helping protect our community’s children? The Westland Police Department is looking for candidates to serve as crossing guards. Crossing guards will receive training in topics such as stranger danger, CPR/First Aid, missing persons, and more. In addition, crossing guards will work at various posts in school parking lots and intersections throughout the city. Learn more and apply here.

OK2Say Presentation – September 16, 2022

We believe Adams Middle School is safe, but no community is immune from the threats of violence and drugs that endanger students and schools in Michigan. To address those concerns and to prepare your child for his or her part in staying safe, Adams is hosting an OK2SAY program for our students on September 16, 2022.

OK2SAY is a student safety initiative available to Michigan students in grades K−12 which enables students to confidentially report potential harm or criminal activities aimed at students, teachers, staff, or other school employees.

The nationally recognized program is run through the Michigan State Police, state agencies, schools, local law enforcement, and community mental health. Tips can be submitted 24-hours-a-day, 7-days-a-week.

  •       Telephone: 8-555-OK2SAY (855-565-2729)
  •       Text: 652729 (OK2SAY)
  •       Email: ok2say@mi.gov
  •       Website: ok2say.com
  •       OK2SAY Mobile app: Available in the Apple Store or Google Play.

OK2SAY tips have helped thousands of students and saved many lives because students are stepping up and speaking out when they are concerned about a friend or peer. There are 31 tip categories to choose from when submitting a confidential tip. Most tips were related to bullying, cyberbullying, self-harm, anxiety, stress and depression, and suicide. Other top tips include drug/alcohol use, weapon possession, or assault.

Upon receipt of a tip, specially trained OK2SAY technicians address the immediate need and forward the information to the appropriate responding law enforcement agency or organization. Tips go to schools, local law enforcement agencies, community mental health agencies or the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services.

To ensure tips are acted upon, agencies receiving tips are asked to submit outcome reports detailing how the tip was handled. Annual reports on the program’s impact detail the types and numbers of tips handled. Annual reports are available on the OK2SAY website.

More information is available on the OK2SAY website (ok2say.com).

If you do not want your child to participate in the OK2Say program, please email eatone@wwcsd.net.

Adams Tardy Policy

As we settle in to routines at Adams, we expect that students arrive to class on time. Five minutes is plenty of time to use the bathroom and take care of what is needed while still arriving to class on time. Here are the consequences we have shared with students in the event that they have four or more tardies each week. Although tardies reset weekly, consequences are progressive.

Welcome Back!

Dear Families,

We are looking forward to welcoming our students back to school in just a couple of short weeks!  This memo is filled with important information. Please take the time to read all sections so you are up to date with current information and understand what needs to be completed prior to school beginning.

If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to one of us directly at eatone@wwcsd.net or bukoskysm@wwcsd.net.

Sincerely,

Erin Eaton & Stacie Bukosky

Meet the Principals

My name is Erin Eaton and I serve as the Principal of Adams Middle School. My educational career began as a teacher in 2004. I was hired after graduating from Eastern Michigan University by the Gibraltar School District. I spent fourteen years as a teacher in the district teaching Young Five’s, Kindergarten, 2nd Grade, and 3rd grade. In 2007, I received my Master’s Degree in teaching from Marygrove College, and in 2018 received my Specialist in Education degree from Central Michigan University. Through this program, I obtained my administrative certificate. In 2018 I was hired by WWCS to serve as the Assistant Principal of Adams Upper Elementary, moving into the principal role in 2019 where I have remained since, as we transitioned to a middle school.

My husband and I have two middle school children. Our daughter is entering 6th grade, and our son 8th. I have recently started coaching softball again for my daughter’s travel team, something I love doing and have missed. We love English Bulldogs and have Jones, a two year old, and recently adopted Dennis, an eight year old.

I look forward to a fantastic year as your partner in your child’s educational journey. I can be reached at eatone@wwcsd.net at any time with questions you have about Adams.

My name is Stacie Bukosky and I am your child’s Assistant Principal. I have been an educator for 12 years. I earned my Bachelor’s degree from EMU and my Master’s degree in Educational Leadership from Concordia University. As a teacher, I taught English/Language Arts (ELA). I taught at Franklin Middle School, then took the leap to teach High School at Wayne Memorial. I have always been highly involved in the Wayne-Westland school community. I immersed myself in coaching, committees, student events, and educational opportunities. In 2019, I interviewed to be the Assistant Principal at Wayne Memorial and was awarded the position. I absolutely love being a building leader. I enjoy working with the students and hearing their stories. I am passionate about guiding our youth in a positive direction.

I am married and have three children. My girls both graduated in 2022 and have started college. I have a daughter attending the University of Tennessee, and another attending Grand Valley State University. My son will be a junior in High school. We have a dog, she is a shorkie. Her name is June and she is definitely spoiled.

I can be reached by email at bukoskysm@wwcsd.net or by phone at (734) 419-2375. I am excited to be working with the students at Adams, and I look forward to a wonderful school year with you and your child.

Material Distribution Days

Chromebooks and schedules will be distributed on August 18/19, 2022. We will also have Lifetouch onsite taking fall pictures. The building will not be open for touring at this time. We will have Open House (information below) to allow you and your student to tour the building prior to school starting. Please complete the technology agreement form found here to expedite Chromebook distribution prior to material distribution. Thank you!

Schedule Changes

We work very hard to create schedules based on student elective choices and academic needs.  We will not honor any schedule changes after the first week of school and will only make changes during week one for the following reasons:
  • Your student has previously taken the class
  • Health reasons
  • Academic misplacement (i.e. if your student was placed in the wrong class such as an advanced class)
Schedules will not be changed for the following reasons:
  • Student does not like the teacher
  • Student wants to be with friends
  • Student wants a different lunch period
  • Student feels the teacher gives too much work
  • Student wants to change class because he/she does not want to do the class work or has not done the reading/required work.

Our counselors will be very busy assisting with material distribution at our Open House, and will not have time to discuss schedules during these events. If you have questions about your child’s schedule, you will be required to schedule an in-person or phone appointment with your child’s counselor. Thank you for understanding.

Ensuring Student Safety at Adams

After hearing of yet another devastating tragedy in Texas this week, it is a good time to remind all families of safety protocols we have in place to ensure the safety of our students and staff at Adams. Our number one priority is to keep everyone safe, and we are committed to continually reviewing our procedures and strengthening them as needed.

  • Anyone that our main office is unable to identify is required to show an ID at the front door and again in the main office
  • We will only allow one adult in the building with proper ID to sign-out a child or drop something off. There is no reason that more than one person is needed in at any time with the exception of a having small child with you or if prior arrangements have been made
  • We will not allow anyone in during passing time. You will be required to wait outside until the bell sounds
  • Please do not allow a person to enter the building as you exit – everyone, no matter, what must ring the bell so we are aware of someone coming in

In addition, please see the letter here shared by Dr. Dignan this week.

From our Music Department

We invite you to join us for an evening of wonderful music!

The Adams MS Instrumental Music department will present their annual Spring Concert on Tuesday, May 31 at 6:00pm. The concert will be located at Stockmeyer Auditorium on the campus of Wayne Memorial High School. Please enter the doors by the auditorium and not the main entrance of the school.

Testing Incentives

May was a tough month as we asked our students to take both MSTEP and NWEA tests. We offered incentives for students to put forth their best effort!  All students that met one growth goal have earned a trip to the Kona trip next Friday. We will also be announcing the SIX raffle winners that get to choose a $50 gift card to a place of their choosing.

Fundraising

All of the test incentives mentioned above are just one thing we are able to provide through fundraising at Adams. Right now, we are selling pizza kits for you to stock up on for the summer while we replenish our fundraising accounts at AMS.
