Back to School Update

Dear Families,

It is hard to believe school is right around the corner!  We hope you are staying healthy and finding time to enjoy the weather.

The first day of school will be on Monday, August 30, 2021 for our Eagles.  This day will be a full day for students.  School will be in session from 7:50 am – 2:40 pm.

This memo is filled with important information.  Please take the time to read all sections so you are up to date with current information and understand what needs to be completed prior to school beginning.

Throughout the year we will communicate with you weekly in this format. More frequent communication may be required at the start of the school year to ensure you have all the information you need to start the year successfully with your student.

We look forward to working alongside you to make this an amazing year for your child.  If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to one of us directly at eatone@wwcsd.net or sheppardl@wwcsd.net.

Sincerely,

Erin Eaton & Lisa Sheppard

Fall sports tryout information will be shared soon!

Updating Registration for Current Students

Please log in to your ParentConnection account to update your child(ren)’s contact information as well as re-acknowledge important school policies.

If you have moved and need to change your address, you will need to bring your new mortgage/lease/current tax bill along with two other proofs of residency to the Administration Office located at 36745 Marquette, Westland MI 48185.

You must be on a computer to complete the registration as it is not mobile/tablet friendly.

MiStar App

For your ease and convenience, there is an app that has been created to have quick access to your Parent and Student Connection. In your Google App or Play store, type in “MiStar” and you will have the option to download the “Q ParentConnection” app for yourself and also the “Q StudentConnection” app for your child. If you get the app, you can select the “Re-Enrollment” in the drop down menu to submit your information that way as well.

Here Comes the Bus App

Wayne-Westland Community Schools has partnered with Here Comes the Bus to offer families an app that will help avoid students and parents from waiting too long for the bus. Here Comes the Bus allows parents to see where their child’s bus is along the route and when it will be at their bus stop.

Last Week of School Schedule/Action Items

It is hard to believe that we are fast approaching our last week of school.  Cohort A students will attend full days on Monday and Tuesday.  Cohort B students will attend on Thursday and Friday.  Thursday and Friday will be half days for Cohort B with dismissal at 11:00 am.  We need your help with the following next week:

  • Ensure your student returns his/her Chromebook and charger.  If we do not get these returned, there will be a fine issued and could result in a new device not being issued in the fall until we receive the device or payment.
  • Please have students return all textbooks. These are VERY expensive to replace and fine notices will be sent home prior to the end of the year if we do not get these back to cover the replacement cost.
  • Please make sure your student has returned all library books from this year or even previous years from different schools.
  • All instrumental music students need to return any instruments to Adams so they can be checked in. Instruments being stored in the music room will be collected during class. Any instruments not turned in before the end of the year will be assessed a replacement fee for the full value of the instrument and all accessories.

Immunization Information – Parent Letter from Health & Human Services

Dear Parents and Guardians:

As many Michigan schools are working hard with concluding the current school year, they are also preparing for the return of students for the 2021-2022 school year. The Michigan Department of Health & Human Services (MDHHS), Division of Immunization wishes to remind you that Michigan schools are required to report immunization information regardless of their mode of instruction (in-person, virtual, and combinations of both). Any student who fails to meet the school immunization requirements shall not be admitted, or able to participate in school classes and activities.

Although you are probably juggling a lot of responsibilities right now, making sure your children are up to date on their shots is one of the best things you can do to protect them against several serious but preventable diseases. Michigan has seen a sharp drop in vaccinations since the start of the pandemic, which is a frightening trend. When children are not vaccinated, they are at risk of getting diseases like measles, chicken pox, and hepatitis A. Falling vaccination rates can lead to new outbreaks of dangerous diseases.

2021/2022 School Year

Beginning in the 2021-2022 school year, Wayne-Westland Community Schools (WWCS) plans to have in-person classes five days a week when the fall semester begins in August. There will be no hybrid programming for the 2021-22 school year.
If you are interested in a virtual option for your child, the Wayne-Westland Virtual Academy is currently accepting enrollment for the 2021-2022 school year.

We are returning to full in-person learning at all campuses (K-12), five days per week for the 2021-2022 school year, barring any unforeseeable event. This is a full load for our students and families who choose to join us for in-person learning. We will continue to practice COVID-19 safety protocols as the District moves into the new school year through the guidance of the Wayne County Health Department and other entities.

General Reminders for Students

Please take the time to review the following with your students  as we begin to round out the year:

  • Cell phones are not permitted at any time during the day.  If we see them being used, it may result in you having to come pick-up the phone.  If you need to reach your child, please call the main office.  Here is our Away for the Day policy for your review.
  • Please ensure that appropriate clothing is worn as the weather gets warmer.  Shirts that expose the stomach and excessively short shorts are not permitted in school.
  • Ensure Chromebooks are brought to school daily and fully charged.
  • Here is the school-wide PBIS expectations matrix for you to review with your student.

A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue ParkBook Summary:

A Long Walk to Water begins as two stories, told in alternating sections, about a girl in Sudan in 2008 and a boy in Sudan in 1985. The girl, Nya, is fetching water from a pond that is two hours’ walk from her home: she makes two trips to the pond every day. The boy, Salva, becomes one of the “lost boys” of Sudan, refugees who cover the African continent on foot as they search for their families and for a safe place to stay. Enduring every hardship from loneliness to attack by armed rebels to contact with killer lions and crocodiles, Salva is a survivor, and his story goes on to intersect with Nya’s in an astonishing and moving way.

One Book, One School

We are excited to launch One Book, One School at Adams this May!  Every student will receive a copy of the book A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park.  Over the course of two weeks, students will be tasked with reading assignments and activities to complete at home with their families.  Below you can read about the benefits of this initiative and will find a summary of the book the entire school will be reading together, at the same time.  More info on this will be shared before we launch this in May!
