Dear Families,

I hope this update finds each of you healthy. Let me start by expressing how much we miss our students and families. Because we can’t be together in person, we have put in place a few ways for us to engage with each other while school remains closed. We will get through this and be learning and having fun together in person soon. Food Distribution Drive Thru 

WWCSD is providing breakfast and lunch for all of our students up to 18 years of age. This pick-up will also include our adult transition students up to age 26. Yesterday food was distributed to students.  Below is the information on the upcoming date/location for drive thru pick-up.

You will enter the driveway on the west end of the Board of Education office on
Marquette. The main entrance at John Glenn High School will be closed. The line will wrap around behind the William D. Ford Career-Technical Center and up to the front entrance of John Glenn High School. Volunteers will bring the food to the vehicle. Meals distributed will follow USDA reimbursable meal guidelines.

The CDC recommends the following precautionary measures to reduce the risk of contracting the virus:

• Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
• Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
• Stay home when you are sick.
• Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
• Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom, before eating and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.

Last night Governor Whitmer ordered the closing of schools in Michigan. We will close beginning Monday, March 16, 2020.  School will resume after spring break on Tuesday, April 14, 2020.

At-Home Suggestions for the School Closure

While on this break from school, we have some suggestions that will make the time at home with your student a bit easier and will help the transition when we return to school next month. 

1. Encourage your child to read twenty minutes in the morning and twenty minutes before bed. Find books that are relative to their interest and their grade level. Consider checking out books electronically through our public library to read on your device. Westland Library Link
2. Limit phone use during the day. Students are not on their phone during the school day, so do your best to restrict phone access while we have this time off from school. This also means monitoring their use of social media. 
3. Do your best to monitor your child’s media exposure. With the current events that are going on right now, some of the information may be too complex for children to understand and may cause some anxiety for children. Discuss what is going on in age appropriate terms, answer questions, but do not overwhelm your child with information.
4. There are many online resources available to parents and teachers during this school shut down. Please look at the link for access to many online resources to help assist with the educational process during this time.  Online Resources
5. For those families who do not have internet access in their home, Comcast is providing internet essentials for those in need. Please check their website for more information. Comcast Internet Essentials
6. Your child can access Compass Learning from home to continue working at his or her math and reading level.  Your child should be able to log-in, but if not, here is a link on how to log-in.

Hungry Howie’s Fundraiser – Extended

We are selling Hungry Howie’s Pizza certificates.  For every certificate sold, the school will get $4.00!  Only cash or money order will be accepted.  All orders must be turned in upon return to school.  Certificates will be delivered as soon as possible once the order is placed.

Battle of the Books Postponed!

Students are bringing home books during the closure to read to prepare for this!  The battle will be held in April once we return.  More details will be sent home after school re-opens.

Meet Ms. Horgan!  She was recently hired as a counselor at Adams. She has taught in various positions and in a few buildings throughout the district.  From Middle and High School ELA to most recently a counselor at Franklin Middle School, she has been an asset to this district.

Battle of the Books!

In honor of reading month, we will be hosting a battle of the books competition during March!  Students will read books and come together to demonstrate their abilities and test their knowledge of the books they have read. The competition is similar in style to the TV series Family Feud. Students are responsible to read at home and will practice with their team during lunch once a week.

Please meet Mrs. Brooks, our new counselor.  She comes to us from Redford Union with twelve years of experience in the classroom.  She earned her undergraduate degree from Madonna and her Master’s from Central Michigan University.

She is a mother of two children.  She enjoys cooking, reading and traveling.  She spends time during the summer on her boat.

We look forward to the new ideas she will bring to Adams and the services she will be providing to our students!

Although I do not have pictures at this time, we are pleased to announce that we are adding two counselors to the Adams Staff!  Eileen Horgan comes to us from Franklin, and Stacy Brooks joins us from Redford Union.

The hiring of these two ladies at this time in the year is to provide scheduling support as we gear up to transition to a Middle School. In addition, they will begin building relationships with our students, and work in a capacity as we see fit to best suit the needs of our students preparing them for the transition to Middle School.

We are excited to have them as part of our team!

Meet our AMAZING Custodial Staff!  Tov Pauling, Brittany Haegar, Rebecca Fox, and Pam Harrington!  Each day they go above and beyond to keep the building clean, safe, and in order.  In addition, this team works to build relationships with our students daily!

Middle School Course Guide/Preference Sheet

Yesterday, your child brought home a middle school course preference sheet and course description guide.  All 7th grade students are required to take English Language Arts, Math, Science and Social Studies.  In addition, elective classes will be offered.  Please review the description of the electives in the course guide with your child.  Together, select six classes, ranking each in order of preference from one-six.  One is the most desired class, two the second most desired class, and so on until six.  These sheets are due back with a parent signature no later than February 14, 2020.  All of this information will be populated into a spreadsheet that our middle school counselors will use to complete scheduling.

Mid-Winter Break

There will not be school the week of February 17 – 21.  School will resume on Monday, February 24, 2020.  If you are in need of a food box over the break, please email Erin Eaton at eatone@wwcsd.net and arrangements will be made for pick-up.

Staff Corner

Meet Ms. Reynolds.  She is a graduate of Central Michigan University (Fire Up Chips!) and earned her Master’s Degree from Wayne State University.  She currently serves as the Instructional Coach at Adams.  In this role, she pushes into classrooms to support teacher instruction.  She has been teaching at Adams for 7 years.  Prior to taking her current role, she was a 5th grade teacher.

Over the summer she got a puppy named Duke and she spends her free time taking him on walks and playing outside. Besides spending time with her puppy, Ms. Reynolds likes to travel, visit museums, and read historical fiction.

Staff Corner

Meet Mrs. Rummel!  She has been a building overload aide at Adams for the past five years.  She spends a portion of her day in the office as well answering phones.

She has five children, a Senior, Junior, Sophomore, Freshman, and 6th grader!  In her free time she enjoys time with family, reading, cooking, and watching her kids play sports.

Phone Calls

Please know that anytime you call the office, teachers and administration may not be available to speak to you immediately.  It is important that we do not interrupt the instruction occurring in classes or disrupt meetings occurring.  Although we understand your need is extremely important, please be patient and know that our days are filled with staff working diligently to ensure our students are thriving in a safe, effective learning environment.

Our secretary will gladly take a detailed message for any staff member and ensure he or she receives it.  Your call will be returned as soon as possible in a 24 hour time frame, unless of course an emergency situation requires immediate attention.

Fundraising Opportunity

Fundraiser materials were sent home on Friday.  If you are able to participate, we encourage you to!  All money that we raise benefits our students directly.  We use the funds raised to purchase classroom materials, rewards for students, and more!  See below for additional information.

Next Early Release Day

February 4th will be the next Early Release Day.  Students will be released from school at 1:50 pm.  Please make necessary arrangements for your child.  Our transportation department will follow their normal routes, beginning at 1:50 pm.  If you pick your child up from school, please be mindful of our early release time if you need to make adjustments to your schedule.  Bright Futures will begin at 1:50 pm for those that attend.

Tutoring @ Jefferson Barnes

We will be partnering with Jefferson Barnes to provide after school tutoring for our students at NO COST.  Tutoring is available Monday-Thursday from 3:00 PM – 5:00 PM.  Transportation is available from Adams to Jefferson Barnes, and then back home.  In addition to tutoring, 3D printing and Robotics classes are available.  If you are interested in this service, please register using the link below.  Once you register, please call the school and let us know so we can send home a transportation permission slip, or download the form and return it to school.

Staff Corner

Meet Mrs. Lietz!  She is a graduate of Michigan State University.  Mrs. Lietz has been at Adams for five years.

She has been married to her husband for a year and a half and they are currently expecting their first child on April 10th.  They also have a dog named Smokey.

Reminder – No School MLK Day

There will be no school on Monday, January 20, 2020 in honor of MLK Day.

Superintendent Search

The Wayne-Westland Community Schools Board of Education is searching for a new Superintendent of Schools. The Michigan Leadership Institute has been engaged with the Board to find the best possible candidate for the position. The Board is asking for community input to assist them in setting the criteria for the next Superintendent.  On Tuesday 1/21/20 at 6:00 PM you are invited to assist in developing the criteria for the next superintendent at the Board of Education.  If you are unable to attend, please share your input using the link below.

Adams Open House for 2020/2021 School Year

Do you know a student scheduled to be attending Adams next year?  If so, please share that we will be hosting an Open House on January 21, 2020 from 5:00 – 7:00 PM.  Families may drop in at any time during the time frame.  Adams swag will be provided!  This event is for new families  transitioning to Adams for the 2020/2021 school year only!  Follow the link below for more information!

Spelling Bee Champs

Congratulations to Logan Talbert, Madelyn Dershinski, Tracy Phan and Kenleigh Ball.  These students will compete in the District Spelling Bee on February 6, 2020 at Adams.

Dressing for the Weather

Please ensure that your child has his or her coat and appropriate footwear for outdoor recess during the winter months.  If this is something that your child does not have, please contact us so we can help!

Ann Arbor Hands on Museum Virtual Learning

Students learned how wind is harnessed and transformed into electricity through this virtual learning lesson provided by the AAHOM.  Students built wind turbines after learning about effective wind turbine design.
