Spring Break – No School

Spring break is March 28 – April 1, 2022. School will resume on Monday, April 4, 2022.

General Reminders:

• If your student needs to leave school prior to the end of the day, please pick him or her up by 2:20 pm. This is very helpful to our office staff as the office becomes very busy during the last portion of the day.
• We do not allow energy drinks of any kind in classrooms or the cafeteria. Please do not allow your child to bring energy drinks to school. Thank you for helping with this.
• Please remind your student to bring his or her Chromebook to school charged daily.
• Remind your child that cell phone use is NOT permitted at any time during the day. We are an off and away for the day school. If your child needs to reach out to you, or you need to get ahold of your child, phones in the main office are available.

8th Grade PSAT Testing

On April 13, 2022, our 8th grade students will be taking the PSAT test. Only our 8th grade students will attend school on this day. There will not be school for any 6th or 7th grade students. More information will be sent home regarding this as we get closer to the day of the test.

Reminder to Parents and Families

It is expected that our students are safe, respectful and responsible at Adams daily. The large majority of our students abide by our expectations and we are grateful for that! 

Outlined below are a few things some of our students have struggled with this year. We ask all students and families to review the bulleted points listed below, along with our PBIS Matrix and Code of Conduct in the Adams Handbook.  This will ensure all students have the best learning experience possible.

• All students are expected to be to class on time. Too many students are tardy to multiple classes during the day. This results in lost learning time and causes a disruption to others in class when those students arrive late. Repeat offenders will lose hallway privileges and serve detention or ISS if the issue continues.

• Some students ignore simple expectations throughout the day such as keeping bags in lockers, cell phones off and away, speaking respectfully to adults and peers, doing what is asked in the classroom and even walking rather than running in the hallway. Students that choose not to follow expectations after a gentle reminder will have consequences as outlined in the Adams Handbook.

We are asking you to please monitor your child’s activity on social media. Cyber bullying that occurs outside of school often leads to problems inside of school. It is impossible for the school staff to monitor and manage what occurs online after school hours and we have unfortunately seen law enforcement become involved in serious situations. Please talk to your child about his or her online behavior, know their passwords, and follow their activity as much as possible to help minimize issues both in and out of school.

Please make sure your child is bringing his or her device to school every day.  These are a necessary tool.

No School the Week of 2/21/22

We will not have school from February 21 – February 25 due to mid-winter break.  School will resume on February 28, 2022.

Updated Mask Guidelines

Upon returning from mid-winter break, masks will be optional in the school setting. Each individual will be respected based on the choice they make.  The school will not require or ask any student to wear a mask during the school day. If you would like your child to continue wearing a mask, please ensure you provide the mask and talk to your child about wearing it.

If your child rides the bus, he or she will still be required to wear a mask while in route to and from school.

Instrumental Music

On Thursday, Dr. Pam Klena (Assistant Professor of Music and conductor of the Symphony Band) and Dr. Jen Oliverio (Trumpet professor) visited us today from Oakland University and had a wonderful time working with all of our instrumental music students. They were very impressed with the progress the students have made so far, especially after a year of mostly virtual learning.

The students were very engaged, respectful and kind with both of them. A student was inspired to see a female conductor, which is awesome! Dr. Klena gave her some resources and gave her one of her batons to start practicing with.

All in all, it was an incredible experience for everyone and a very bright spot in the week. They’re hoping to come visit us again in April or May to see what progress we’ve made and help some more.

Rescheduled! February 11, 2022 – Oxford Strong Day

Please consider joining us to show support for Oxford victims on February 11, 2022 by purchasing a shirt for your child to wear to school.  See the details from MHSAA below.

In order to specifically help fund Oxford High School and its community, E.A. Graphics created the SupportOxfordStrong.com website for people to purchase “Oxford Strong” T-shirts and hoodies. According to the MHSAA, a large portion of each purchase will be donated to Oxford High School. Every purchase of a $20 T-shirt will get $16.20 donated.

NWEA Growth Goals

The song “We are the Champions” will soon be ringing through our halls as we present our student body with the NWEA Middle School Champions trophy for Winter 2022.  We had the largest percentage of students from all of the middle schools meet reading and math growth goals on this test!

51.7% of our students met their math goal

47.3% of our students met their reading goal

For every growth goal met, students were awarded one raffle ticket.  If students met goals in math, reading and science, they earned three tickets.  If they met their goal in only one or two areas, they earned one or two tickets.  In addition, we awarded all students that completed the One Book One School work one raffle ticket. In total, students had the opportunity to earn four raffle tickets.  There were 743 earned raffle tickets!  On Monday, we will select three winners that will win a pair of APPLE AIRPODS using our wheel of names.  The recording of the drawing and winners will be shared and announced on Monday!

We are SO Proud of ALL students that met at least one of their goals!  435 of our students accomplished this and will choose a full size candy bar on Monday to be recognized for their HARD WORK!

PBIS Rewards

What is PBIS?

PBIS stands for Positive Behavioral Interventions & Supports. It is an evidence-based framework used by schools to improve school culture and student behavior, promoting a safe environment for learning. PBIS is based on several decades of research by major universities across the country. A key aspect of PBIS is focusing on more positive behaviors and less on negative behaviors. What is PBIS Rewards?

PBIS Rewards is a Software-as-a-Service solution that provides an automated school-wide PBIS management system. Our system simplifies the implementation and tracking of the PBIS framework within a school. With PBIS Rewards, school administration can clearly see how teachers are utilizing PBIS and how PBIS is improving school culture.

PBIS Rewards is easy-to-use, fun for both students and staff and provides accountability for everyone in the school. Our suite of PBIS Apps includes a Parent App that gives parents a view into how their child is doing with respect to the PBIS program.

We have started using this app with our students and are launching our store this week.  THANK YOU to all that shared our PBIS store Amazon Wishlist or donated to it to get the store off the ground and running.  A huge shout out goes out to our Social Worker, Mrs. Roop for her hard work preparing the store for out students!

Ask your child about this and have them show you their point balance!  If interested, you can download the parent app as well by following the link above!

Swimming Update – From Coach Mills

My name is Dan Mills and I am the head coach for the swimming team at Adams. We will start practice Monday, February 7, 2022 at 4:45 PM and end at 6:00 PM at the pool at John Glen High School. You can enter through the door facing the tennis courts in the back of the high school. We will be practicing with Franklin and Stevenson Middle Schools. All of our coaches are CPR certified and have coached in the district at the high school and middle school levels before. In order to swim you must have a physical on file, swim suit and goggles. Physicals can be done for free and onsite at Adams if you schedule on with the Beaumont Child Health Center.

For girl swimmers, a one piece suit is required, and for boys, swim jammers are highly recommended. They can be bought from Dick’s Sporting Goods.

Girl’s Basketball Defeats SMS Saints

The Eagles defeated the Stevenson Saints in the girl’s basketball season home opener this week.  The Varsity girls won 42-14, and the JV team won 30-8. Way to go, Eagles!

Lunchtime Basketball/Free Gym Time

We are happy to allow our students time during the second half of their lunch period to enjoy some free time in the gym.  We do offer this as an incentive each week for those that arrive to class on time without more than three tardies.  Not only do we hope that this will decrease tardies, but we hope it will help our students stayed focused in the afternoon.

Today marks the end of semester 1.  Report cards will not be sent home with students.  They will be viewable on Parent Connect beginning on January 31, 2022.  If you need assistance with Parent Connect, please call Mrs. Bailey at 734-419-2379.

Please check your email with instructions on how to create your account.  This will allow us to communicate with you directly to your phone in the form of a text message through an app, and will soon allow you to communicate direct with your child’s teachers.

We will transition to remote learning for one week, January 10-14, 2022.  Please review the letter sent to all families by Dr. Dignan here.  There will not be any school on MLK Day, Monday, January 17, 2022.  We will return to in person learning on Tuesday, January 18, 2022. Due to this transition, we are moving our finals week and semester end back one week.

The schedule for AMS will be as follows:

January 10-14, 2022 – All PreK-12 grade students will engage in remote instruction

• Students at AMS will follow our traditional bell schedule and attend all six hours per day.  You can view the schedule here.

January 17, 2022  – No School – Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day

January 18, 2022  – In-person learning resumes, Full Day

January 19, 2022 – Full Day

January 20, 2022 –  ½ day of instruction for middle school, exams

January 21, 2022 –  ½ day of instruction for middle school, exams

If your child is not at school today and did not take their device home, they may pick it up this afternoon or on Monday morning if your student needs it.

Student Expectations for Remote Learning

• Students log into all Google Meet sessions each day according to regular class times as outlined in the bell schedule above (Links will be in Goggle Classroom)
• Students log-in on time for class
• Students complete all tasks assigned by teachers in Google Classroom
• Attendance is based on logging in to Google meet and grades are based on the completion of work

Food Distribution/Athletics

Information regarding food distribution will be sent by the district this weekend.  Coaches will provide you with information regarding practice schedules for next week.

If your child is sick, please keep him or her home.  We ask that you complete the daily health screener found here each and every day.  If your child displays any of these symptoms please do not send him or her to school.  If you are sending your child to school sick, others are impacted and in some cases being required to quarantine.

If your child is pending a COVID test result, please do NOT send him or her to school.  Also, ALL students must wear a mask properly.  Masks must cover the mouth and nose at all times.  Please send your child to school with a mask daily.

The Beaumont Adams Child & Adolescent Health Center located inside of Adams Middle School is offering the vaccine for students over 5 years of age.  Please call (734) 728-2423 to make an appointment. 

February 4, 2022 – Oxford Strong Day

Please consider joining us to show support for Oxford victims on February 4, 2022 by purchasing a shirt for your child to wear to school.  See the details from MHSAA below.

In order to specifically help fund Oxford High School and its community, E.A. Graphics created the SupportOxfordStrong.com website for people to purchase “Oxford Strong” T-shirts and hoodies. According to the MHSAA, a large portion of each purchase will be donated to Oxford High School. Every purchase of a $20 T-shirt will get $16.20 donated.

We have launched out school-wide reading of Ban This Book. We encourage ALL students to join the Google Classroom using the code ubtet5z.  It is not too late!

Book Summary:

It all started the day Amy Anne Ollinger tried to check out her favorite book in the whole world, From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler, from the school library. That’s when Mrs. Jones, the librarian, told her the bad news: her favorite book was banned! All because a classmate’s mom thought the book wasn’t appropriate for kids to read. Amy Anne decides to fight back by starting a secret banned book library out of her locker. But soon things get out of hand, and Amy Anne finds herself on the front line of an unexpected battle over book banning, censorship, and who has the right to decide what she and her fellow students can read. In the end, her only recourse might be to try to beat the book banners at their own game. Because after all, once you ban one book, you can ban them all…

Dear Families,

Happy New Year! We wish you a year filled with health and happiness. Please take the time to read all sections of this update so you have current information regarding things occurring at Adams and in the district.  We look forward to welcoming students back in person on Monday, January 3, 2021. Please make sure your child is to school on time.  Our doors open at 7:20 am for those having breakfast, and 7:40 am for all others. School begins at 7:50 am.

School Expectations

Before returning to school on Monday, please review our school expectations with your student.  We focus on being safe, respectful and responsible at Adams.  Also remind your student that we are an off and away for the day school and we do not permit cell phone use at any time.  Each student has his or her own locker to lock phones in if they bring one to school.

The expectations can be found below. If your child is not following our expectations, consequences will be issued.  At Adams, we work hard to change negative behaviors by teaching and conferring with students to resolve problems when they arise. With the re-teaching of expectations, students in most cases are also issued a consequence.  Depending on the nature of the offense, students may serve a lunch detention, after school detention, have privileges revoked, be assigned restitution tasks, suspended in school or out of school, or other consequences deemed appropriate. You will be notified if there is ever a consequence issues due to an office referral.

School-Wide Communication System

We have been VERY patiently waiting to launch a school wide text message communication system called SchoolCNXT that will make it very easy to communicate with all teachers and groups on one platform.  Please look for an email next week (fingers crossed) that tells you how to sign up! We are a pilot school in the district and will be seeking your feedback on the usefulness of the platform.
